Asheville Communities Network
2009 Summer Tours of Intentional Communities

This summer the ACN Program Committee has decided to take our meetings to another level and have people experience communities on site and see them in person.

Our first tour will be:

Sunday, July 12 – 4:00-6:00pm –

 at the Prama Institute
  Marshall, NC

We will tour the land, current structures, educational facilities, gardens, dairy farm and future building sites for co-housing and cluster homes.

Also Sid Jordan, Executive Director of Prama Institute, will present the map of their existing facilities as well as their future plans.  There will be plenty of time for questions and answers about their community and the experiences they had in its development.

We won’t be having a potluck at this event so we recommend you bring your own snacks and water.

It sits near the French Broad River, about 25 minutes outside Asheville, NC. Our scenic and peaceful surroundings create the perfect place for educational conferences, yoga retreats, workplace seminars, and other events.

Some of the many areas of training and direct experience are in yoga and meditation, communication skills, organic gardening, and green construction. Sunday, August 9,

2:00- 6pm

 Hickory Nut Farm
 Gerton, NC

Approximately 13 miles from Asheville
Hickory Nut Forest, an emerging Eco-Community located in Western North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains, is a gem amidst the magnificent Hickory Nut Gorge. Out your back door, you can hike for miles enjoying the serenity of nature surrounded by “forever-wild” mountain forests, soaring cliffs and pristine, cascading streams.

This is a unique eco-friendly community close to Asheville with plans to combine land conservation, green-built homes, organic gardening and renewable energy from wind, water, sun, and geothermal sources. Here, you can be part of designing a “net zero energy homes community,” that creates more renewable energy than it uses.

 WHO WE ARE

The Asheville Communities Network is information and education on co-housing and other intentional community options in the Asheville area for those who are actively seeking or simply curious about alternate lifestyles for themselves and their families.  We strive to serve as the clearinghouse and connector for all forms of intentional community in the mountains of Western North Carolina.

This site has resources, definitions and links for general information on all forms of intentional community.  More locally, we include profiles and contacts for many of the existing and forming communities in Asheville, North Carolina and the surrounding areas.

Our organization holds monthly gatherings to foster education and training to learn about alternative forms of community and living together. We are a place to gather and share, a place to coordinate efforts so each group knows they don't have to reinvent the wheel.  We relationship build and introduce new people to the concepts of living in community.
